Chapter 16

WHEN NATANIEL MET WITH me in the woods, far from any vampires or spies who could follow either him or me, I noticed that he was more relaxed around me than usual. His hands were tucked in the pockets of his light blue jeans as he lounged against one of the trees and whistled some unknown melody.

“Hey,” I said, approaching him. “What are you so happy about?” I still sharpened my senses just in case this was some kind of a trap.

“I’m glad you could come,” he said.

“Why?” I eyed him carefully. “Did you catch the murderer?”

His smile faded a little. “Nope, not yet, but we know who was responsible for delivering the drinks to the party.”

“Ah. I suppose you can’t tell me since I’m a vampire and could be forced to tell someone.” I traced my finger over the rough edge of a tree trunk.

“Maybe I can.”

I looked up at him.

“You didn’t tell anyone you were coming here, and I’m sure no one followed either of us. Besides, vamps have spies everywhere. I don’t doubt they’ll find a way to figure out everything we know, but that won’t help them.”

“Okay.” I came to stand in front of him as he pushed himself off the tree. “Then tell me.”

“Not so fast.” He stretched out his arms. “I believe that you want to find our bad guy as much as I do, but I can’t really give you everything for nothing when you might use it against me and my family. However, I need some info you might have, and I have some info you want, so how about you give something to me and I’ll give something to you.”

I tilted my head. “And how will I know you’re not lying or playing me to get what you want?”

He shrugged. “You can’t know, and you don’t have to tell me anything, but.... That will delay everything, and you’ll have to sit in front of your house and wait in case a big bad vampire comes for your family. Except he’s so much more powerful than you and your family won’t be in one place all the time.”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it.” I chewed on the inside of my cheek. I didn’t like this, but Nat was right. It wasn’t as if I’d be giving any information that could endanger anyone other than the guilty person, and I certainly wanted them stopped. “You first.”

“Okay. The company that delivered the drinks to the house during the day is owned by a vamp named Hugo,” Nat said. Marcos’ father?

“That doesn’t mean he was the one who ordered for the drinks to be poisoned.”

“No, of course not, but it’s something.”

“Are you going to question him about it?” I wondered why he hadn’t done it already. Actually, the hunters were aware vampires were involved, but nobody had come to question anyone, which didn’t make any sense.

By the time someone came, the vampires could come up with whatever story they wanted and maybe even fabricate evidence to cover up everything.
